Projects

Reforesting Scotland has carried out a range of projects over the years, and continues to do so. Delivering support and advice to people developing their own initiatives which contribute to a sustainable Scotland can be as important as lobbying the government to change their policies. We try to avoid competing with other organisations providing such services, often filling a gap in provision of advice and support for community and individual initiatives. The projects respond to the needs of the membership and project participants and we are innovative in our approach and in the subjects we cover.

Access and Inclusion: Woods for All

The Woods for All logoEncouraging access for disabled people to woodlands all over Scotland, and surveying sites to see how access may be improved.

Woods for All activities include:

Forest Harvest and Rural Alternatives projects

Rural Alternatives focuses on promoting alternative livelihood opportunities from sustainable use of local woodland resources. Forest Harvest includes all of Reforesting Scotland's non-timber forest product (NTFP) involvements. There is considerable overlap between these two areas of activity.

These projects include:

  • Non-Timber Forest Products (NTFPs) Promoting non-timber forest products - food, decorative products, herbal medicines and pharmaceuticals - and helping companies to market these products. Reforesting Scotland projects involving NTFPs include the Rural Alternatives Shared Futures project, the ForestHarvest website, and involvement in the Scottish Working Woods label, as well as producing information and organising seminars.
  • Sustainable Forest Harvest project - monitoring NTFP harvests
  • Rural Alternatives Shared Futures project This major Reforesting Scotland initiative aims to explore options for rural communities in the sustainable use of NTFPs in woodlands across Scotland.
  • ForestHarvest website - Scotland's only website dedicated to NTFPs
  • The Scottish Working Woods label Reforesting Scotland is one of the partner organisations involved with developing and administering this initiative to promote products from Scotland's woods
  • Fuelwood - Promoting schemes to use fuelwood - logs, woodchips, sawdust, etc. - as an alternative method of heating and power in rural areas.

Low Impact Living project

Low impact living means individuals and groups of people building a low-carbon, environmentally sustainable lifestyle. The Low Impact Living project seeks to raise awareness of the barriers to and opportunities for low impact development, particularly in relation to forests and forest resources, in Scotland.
